Agni
The north-eastern coast of Corfu boasts some of the most scenic landscapes and pristine locations found in the whole island. The bay of Agni is one of them.
About the region..
Carved into the rugged coastline, this picturesque bay is situated 27km from Corfu town and just 11km from Kassiopi, the largest settlement in northern Corfu.
At first sight, one is amazed by the beauty of the natural setting. Agni nestles in a wildly verdant cove, contoured by cypress and olive trees.
The beach is covered in shiny pebbles, shelving deep into crystalline waters. The location is truly unspoiled, just as its name suggests in Greek. The sea bottom is rocky and hides underwater caves in some parts, which makes the beach ideal for diving and snorkeling to explore the wonders that lie under the sea surface.
There is a trio of small taverns along the waterfront, offering sunbeds to the guests and, of course, delicious traditional cuisine.
The best choice while visiting Agni would probably be to rent a boat. This way you can discover all the small, pebbled beaches scattered along the lovely, verdant coastline, stopping to whichever appeals to you, admiring their unique natural beauty. The coast all the way up to Kassiopi is full of such coves, offering privacy and tranquility. Make a stop along the way to have lunch in one of the seafront taverns, all equipped with jetties where you can leave your boat to enjoy your meal before continuing your journey. Rest assured that you will receive a much friendly and warm welcome from locals. Agni’s charm consists in its easy-going and laid-back approach to life and its low-key atmosphere.
Visiting the nearby sleepy villages and pebbled coves by car is just as easy. The bay above, called Kalami, is where novelist Lawrence Durrell’s home still stands today. Head further north to Kerasia, one of the best beaches in the north-east, or Agios Stefanos just above, a crescent coast with just enough facilities to sustain the place’s idyllic natural beauty. Or you can drive further and reach the village of Kassiopi with its picturesque harbor and cobbled streets. Wherever you go, Agni’s beauty will definitely have you coming back for more.
